NaNoWriMo 2016

Hey guys,

as per-usual I have to apologise for something, I am aware I have been the most active recently even after saying I would be. For once it has nothing to do with me, sort of. Recently I've been having some problems with my laptop, I might have accidentally smashed the screen, then it stopped charging and slowly began to die. Then it was my birthday and I got a shiny new one, and now I've learnt how to use it properly I can begin to get back into blogging.

Today I'd like to talk about NaNoWriMo, you may have seen my failed attempt last year, if not go check the tab named 'my book' to find chapter one to be part of . This year I'm writing it with a friend and we're doing quite well so far. We both have individual characters that we write and, in my opinion, we have a good plot to work with.

I would highly encourage you to take part in NaNoWriMo, it's not too late. Even if you don't reach the 50,000 words by the end of November, it's still a great experience and something to be a part of.

To finish this post I thought you might like to see the prologue for out story, soon I'll be replacing Silhouette of a City with this on the 'my book' page.

—Prologue—

The nightclub was hot; hot and sweaty. Pounding music thrummed from all four walls. Young, writhing bodies danced together across the floor, occasionally stumbling in their drunken state. A sickening aroma of perfumed perspiration suffocated everyone. Pools of cheap, spilt liquor created an intoxicating wash over the linoleum floor.

But none of that really mattered, because Elliot was rip-roaring drunk. Absolutely hammered, and having the time of his life.

His 21st birthday party was the greatest, most epic celebration hosted by anyone in his entire lodging house, and he wanted them to know. Glass of cheap lager in hand, he was bopping and grinding to some awful rave tune that was being blasted through the speakers in every corner of the room. His partner, a girl he had met only a few moments ago and quite liked the look of, was similarly intoxicated. Not much was running through his brain right now, only the music, the girl, and how to finish off this party spectacularly. The girl with no name tried to talk to him, but he ignored her, still staring off into the abyss. Eventually she got bored and moved on to another young man, hoping to find someone to entertain her later that night. Elliot didn’t really care too much. Someone bumped into him, spilling drink down his front. Elliot’s eyes came into focus on a younger college boy slurring apologies as he stumbled nonchalantly away. In his place, about 15 feet away from Elliot stood was a woman. You couldn’t really call her a girl. It just didn’t suit her. Her presence of being was blinding, yet skewed, like she was everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. She was tall and incredibly slim, sculpted with muscle. Her face was round with a pointed chin and a sharp elongated nose. Her lips were a full oxblood red. Deep set lines sculpted her face, chin length white gold hair curved along the arch of her jaw. Her skin was a perfect porcelain white, flawlessly covering every curve. She had her arms completely straight at her sides, like they could be snapped off. A sleeveless floor length midnight gossamer gown draped from her neck over her delicate frame. It moved like water, it looked like smoke, and while it was dark it wasn’t the darkness of peaceful moonlit nights, but rather a darkness that suggested death, a darkness that lasted forever, sucking you in for eternity. Bare toes peeked out from beneath the hem of her gown. Beyond all that though, beyond her slender arms and silky hair, it was her eyes that captivated him. He wasn’t sure if the alcohol was playing tricks on him or not, because what he saw was not completely human. Deep set eyes, completely black from pupil to iris, surrounded by fluttering lashes, so thick they looked like a butterflies wings, the moment before they are ripped off. Her eyes were intoxicating; more so than the drink in his hand or the beat in his ears, and they were staring right through him. His heart pounded at the site of her, at her mysterious, deadly aura, at her eyes that bore into his soul. He wasn’t sure what it was, but he needed to touch her. Strangely, suddenly, the strong urge overcame him, driven by the hammering melody in his ears. Determinedly discarding his drink at a nearby table, he made his clumsy way towards her. She continued staring at him, obviously not bothered by social convention or simply seeming rude. Maybe she was drunk too? She didn’t look it. She was slightly shorter than him, and definitely significantly smaller than Elliot, despite his lanky frame. Tentatively, he reached out an arm to touch her, and without moving, seemingly without doing anything, she let out a shrieking wail, so high it could have pierced his eardrums, so high you would think it couldn’t even be heard by humans, and so loud that you’d think it would wake up anyone within miles, and disappeared. Leaving only a small cloud of smoke where her shoeless feet stood less than a second ago. Elliott studied the room, stunned that nobody else had heard their encounter. But nobody had. And that was that. He stood there stunned, and alone, thinking about his outstretched hand that caressed the veil of the woman’s arm, and then went straight through it.

Monsters by Emerald Fennell

Hey guys,

In the time where my blog posts came few and far between I got quite far behind on my reviews. You're probably wondering where my review for The Cursed Child is and it will be coming. Most worrying is the absence of my Empire of Storms review, I have read it in fact I finished it the day after it came out, but I thought I would re-read the whole series and then review all them as I want to have those reviews on here. after that long winded intro, today I'll be reviewing Monsters by Emerald Fennel, this book is a little different for me, however Emerald is among the authors I met at YALC and her book intrigued me.

This book is weird, It's very enjoyable but also very odd. The language is so different and makes the characters seem a bit weird in the head. I think the spin she put on her characters was like nothing I've ever read. he protagonists were young teens, but they already seemed so mature, and a little sadistic. This book surprised as it wasn't what I was expecting at all. Also the chapters are quite short which makes it easier to read.

It's basically about a boy and girl who meet over the summer and attempt to solve this murder mystery. The details are best left for you to discover yourself, and I really don't want to spoil it.

I would recommend this book, but I would be warned it is a bit weird. It's great if you're interested in branching out and trying a new genre.
I'm leaving this a non-spoiler review as there wouldn't be much to discuss in the spoiler section, plus I would like to get this out as I'm falling behind a little bit again. My next post will be a bit more exciting as will my next few reviews.

Happy Reading xx

Happy Blog Birthday!

Hey guys,

I know it's been a really long time since I last posted, and I know that is quite a regular thing for you to hear on my blog, and I'm sorry. I recently went back to school, and as this year I'm starting my GCSE's there's been a lot of pressure and a lot of homework. On top of my extra curricular activities I haven't really had much time. Not only has this really set me back on things like reviews I also hate leaving this blog derelict for so long. Also, my laptop is totally smashed up right now, which makes it really hard to use as I can't see the screen all that well. However, despite all of that I've made it through one whole year of blogging. So in celebration I thought I would bring you my 'YA readers, top reads' list. this is basically a list of all the books I'd recommend to any YA reader...

~ Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas
Not only is this my favourite book/series it's also extremely well written and full of very attractive people. The depth of the story is so well crafted and the characters are all so real. There's something in it for everyone, and though the protagonist is a girl there are some very central men as well. And, as I mentioned, literally everyone is attractive so there's plenty of crush material

~ Only Ever Your by Louise O'Neill

This one is a fairly recent read for me, but I wanted to include it anyway. This book has a really interesting take on feminism and ownership of women. It really makes you think and can have a huge impact on your life. If you have any major body insecurities I would recommend to approach this book with caution, in can have a huge impact on your mind's view of yourself. However, it is an incredible, life changing book.

~ Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I'm currently reading the sequel to this one and it's making me remember how much this book blew me away. It's a fantastic heist novel and the group of friends in it a re so diverse and are hilarious. All the characters are so different that there really is something for everyone and it's not something I've ever read before in YA. You don't need to have read the Grisha Trilogy prior to this one but there are some minor spoilers in book two.

~ The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

What I love about this one is that they're fairy tail retellings but sci-fi. It's really fun to try and pick out elements of the original fairytale in the stories. The characters once again are really diverse and it's a great show of female leadership. I think it shows a really interesting projection of the future as well as it being a little unrealistic. The books are super easy to read and are quick to fly through despite them being long.

~ The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Now this one isn't one my personal favourites but to be accepted into the YA community you need to have this. It is such a staple in Young Adult writing and if you haven't read it you be very quick to be killed in the YA world. It is such a pioneer of it's style and really started this whole dystopian craze. It inspired books like Divergent which is also a major staple but I didn't really enjoy it. The movies are also great and among some of the best book to movie adaptations I've ever seen.

So there we go. I know there aren't that many on there and there are more I want to add but I thought this could be a fun ongoing project, I'll add to it regularly and you guys can see my YA must reads.
Thank you to all the people out there who can be bothered to read this blog I do appreciate it, and it's a nice feeling to know someone out there is reading and enjoying what you submit. Happy first birthday to my blog and may we see many more.
Also I apologise for any spelling errors but my computer is about to die, and it won't charge for some reason.

Not Reading Empire of Storms?!?!

Hey Guys,

I can't believe it's only one day until Empire of Storms!!
Recently I've been hearing a lot of people who have heard spoilers complaining about the book. People have been hating of Sarah J. Maas and it's going as far as death threats. I think this behaviour is disgusting, your hating on a person for not fufilling your needs and wants, Sarah is one person and can not and shouldn't have to write exactly what you want. On the other side of things people are saying they just wont read it, because they're satisfied with the four books they have and don't want it to be spoiled for them, this I understand, though I am way to invested to not finish the series. My only concerns are for the death of someone like Rowan, Dorian or Aelin herself.

A while back when the title was first released I did a post on my theories for Empire of Storms (I'll link the original at the bottom) My theories still stand and hearing what other people are syaing they don't seem so outrageous so I thought I would bring them back for all the fans who just can't wait. I'll also list some of things I want to happen.

If you are not up to date with all the Throne of Glass books I'd highly suggest leaving to avoid spoilers and discussion of the first four books...

First let's talk about those all important theories, after reading Queen of Shadows I began to think of the things I thought were likely to play out as well as some of the things I would like to see intertwined...

1. Yrene Towers. Yrene Towers is a character we met in the Assassins Blade; The assassin and the healer. At the end of that particular novella Celeana/Aelin pays for Yrene to attend Torre Cesme, the acadamy for healers. Torre Cesme also happens to be the place we just sent Chaol. We've got to have her in the story. Sarah J Maas doesn't just write a chracter and leave them, they keep getting dregged up until they either: meet their end, or become a more central character. No one has really thought about her but to be the idea of her being in it just seems obvious

2. A big part of Throne of Glass is the POV's. There are always loads and they contribute to the story. Who do I think we will get a POV from? I have quite a few. We obviously have our main characters: Aelin, Dorian and Chaol. I think we will also get Rowan, Aedion and Manon, I don't know about Lysandra. But in addition I think we will get Yrene and Elide.

3. This one may be slightly far fetched and biased but, who cares? So I am a massive Celorian shipper. I love Celorian (celeana and dorian) and will do till the end. So, right now Aelin is with Rowan and I don't think she'll leave him without being forced to. Bringing back the 'Sarah doesn't just leave characters' we've got to bring Lorcan back. What I'm thinking is that Lorcan comes back and kills Rowan, after a long fight of course. Then, in a bling rage Aelin kills Lorcan. Not only does this allow the way for Celorian but it gets rid of Lorcan and brings the story with the war closer.

4. This one is less of a theory and more of a thought, but I'll mention it anyway. Arobynn died last book, and after all he was made up to be I personally think his death was a little under whelming. Aelin didn't even get involved, I thought killing Arobynn would be like when she killed Grave; torturous. So, I think Arobynn died to easily so I began thinking: what if he wasn't dead? I know it sounds crazy, conseidering Aelin did cut his head off. But, my mind keeps snagging on the idea. Arobynn is also the type of person the guess something like this and have a twin or a double or even using magic to get out of it.

Next I'll mention what I'd like to see in Empire of Storms, these are all things I'm not nessecarily expecting but would love to see.
~ Celorian
~ More Manon Vs Aelin
~ Some fun new characters
~ Dorian in general
~ Some new ships
~ Aelin rebuilding Terrassen
~ Arobynn not being dead
~ Elide's adventure
~ Epic fight scenes
~ More character building from some of the characters

I hope you enjoyed that it was a little different but I really wanted to post something the day before Empire of Storms comes out. Tomorrow I'm going to a book shop after school with my friend to buy the book, I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself. See you soon.
Happy Reading!

Asking For It by Louise O'Neill

Hey Guys,

I just got back from my holiday and I'm now beginning to binge write loads of posts to prepare for back to school so I'm prepared for anything. I finished this book way back at the beginning of the summer so my opinions may be a bit rusty but it's a book  I really wanted to review. Today I'll be reviewing Asking For It by Louise O'Neill.
I was lucky enough to meet this author a YALC where I got her other book Only Ever Yours signed. Shall we advance with the non spoilery section.

My first impression after reading this was that it wasn't as good as Only Ever Yours, but after letting it sit for a bit I would that it isn't worst, it's just different. It was a lot more realistic and more real themes. I think the character in this book were really interesting because as people you wouldn't like them but you still sympathise with them. I think the situation in the book is something society is still facing and dealing with and it's not really getting better.

The main character in this novel is called Emma and she is extremely pretty and flaunts it and gets a lot of attention from boys. She doesn't have a great relationship with her friends, and flirts with boys that her friends like. The main theme of book is easy to guess from the title of the book but if you haven't guessed I won't spoil it for you.

This where I leave all of the non spoilerys, I recommend this book highly, as well as Only Ever Yours. The author is lovely and her books really highlight problems that have been normalised in every day society even though they are awful. They tackle feminism from different sides and angles and I would recommend her highly.
Leave now if you haven't read it and I'll see you soon.

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

Hey Guys,

Today I'll be reviewing our book of the month for An Infinite Philosophy, now I'm aware we haven't been the most consistant with our collab reviews for An Infinite Philosophy but it's mostly to do with our lives being to full or book slumps, so I'm sorry about our inconsistancy but we think we've solved the problem, but I tell you about that next year.
Anyway this month's book was It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover, and as usual I was first to finish it and am here with a review.

I feel like this book had many of Colleen's siginature plot traits but there were some new things. I really enjoyed it, though it surprised me. A while back I watched a interview with her and she mentioned this novel but she said she would write from two male point of views which I was excited about. However, it wasn't written like that but I still loved it. The characters, as usual were very relatable even though their situations are nothing like I've experienced.

The book is told from Lily's point of veiw, she was involved with a boy called Atlas in her past, and she's currently with a different boy. Then she runs into Atlas again. I think unlike other Colleen books it can still be very enjoyable even if you know all of what happens as it really is all in the detail and the writing.

This is where I leave all the non-spoilerys, I recommend picking this up though I do prefer some of her other books over this one. Anything by Colleen Hoover is wonderful and I would highly recommend her as an author. I'm sorry if it all seems a bit rushed and un-edited but I'm writing this really quickly and I'll edit after my holiday.
I will see all you non-spoilerys later...

YALC 2016 Experience + Haul

Hey Guys,

I feel like I start every post with me apologising for something but I make a lot of mistakes so it's to be expected. So, I'm sorry for my recent absence my life hasn't been very busy, but my days seem to be full. I'm going to Canada tomorrow which I'm really excited about, so in advance I'm writing a good amount to get myself ready.

Anyway, the point of this post was to tell you about YALC which I attended with four friends. We only went on one day which was Sunday 31st July and we were there from about 10:00 until 5:30 so most of the day. I thought I would talk you through what we did and what I thought as well as talking about the books I bought and got signed.

When we arrived the first thing we did was purchase the YALC tote bag, then we signed up to a writing workshop, we attended the fanfiction workshop which was hosted by Lucy Saxon at 11:00. Although the workshop was quite interesting and included some tips you might me able to apply to normal fiction writing we were expecting something a bit more interactive. She talked a lot about the different types of fic and what affects the look of your writing.

After that we proceeded to walk around and have a look at the different publishing stalls, sign up to different things and pick up freebies including a hell of a lot of badges. Overall I got 33 free badges, two free totes and one I paid for, seven chapter samplers and three books. We also met met some lovely authors and got our bags and books signed.

After having a walk around we attended one of the panels. At 1:00 we went to the #morallycomplicatedYA panel. There were four authors there who talked about the complication of morals in their characters and how their emotions affect their writing. They talked about the censorship of their books in shops and even countries. The authors were Louise O'Neill, Melvin Burgess, Emerald Fennell and Manuela Salvi. We all agreed that the panel was the highlight of the day, it was really eye opening for me as it opened a new window in writing. We enjoyed it so much that we bought books one of the authors and queued to meet some of them.

After the panel we ate our lunch and read for a bit in the reading area. We were considering attending the Potter Party but after a while it got a bit boring so instead we went back to reading as well having a look at the publishing stands and picking up some books during the flash sales.

Now we reach the haul part of this post, I'll make lists under different categories to make this slightly easier.

Like I mentioned I got seven chapter samplers, some of the books have been released whilst others haven't (there will a * next to the books that haven't been released):

~ Ink by Alice Broadway*
~ Girl Hearts Girl by Lucy Sutcliffe
~ Holding up the Universe by Jennifer Niven*
~ This Raging Light by Estelle Laure
~ Broken Sky by L.A. Weatherly
~ Unconventional by Maggie Harcourt*
~ Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo*

I took two books with me to get signed but I bought some others whilst I was there, I'll list the books I bought first, then the ones I got signed:

~ Girl Hearts Girl by Lucy Sutcliffe
~ Looking for JJ by Anne Cassidy
~ Only Ever Yours by Louise O'Neill

I got signed:

~ A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
~ Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton
~ Only Ever Yours by Louise O'Neill
(I also got my tote bag signed by those authors as well as Emerald Fennell)

Overall I had an absolutely lovely time and am really looking forward to attending next year. I would recommend the main panels if you are going to attend as the one I attended was fantastic.
Happy Reading!
